Sealing your wheels the easy way

Alloys CarPro Guide Hydro Hydro2 Pro Valet Magazine PVD Seal Wheels

Detailing Science

Sealing your wheels can be a plebian task, with no way of reaching the rear of the barrels without removing the wheels from your car.
Here at PVD we heard one of our traders can put an end to hours of tireless work and protect our wheels in minutes with a durable silica coating. You know we just had to investigate.

Manufacturer info:
Introducing the incredibly easy to use, effective, and revolutionary WIPE-LESS spray sealant! CarPro HydrO2 is formulated with Hydrophilic glass fibers, silicon polymers, and fluoropolymers and can be applied to all vehicle surfaces! Paint, glass, plastic, wheels, calipers, and wheel wells are all easily within reach with HydrO2. HydrO2 was specifically formulated to save time and therefore money for professionals and enthusiasts alike! This new innovative coating creates an ultra-water-repellent surface and is applied by simply spraying on and rinsing off with high pressure water!

The application:
Armed with a set of freshly cleaned, but unprotected, wheels and 100ml of Hydro2 concentrate from CarPro UK we had ourselves the perfect test bed.
The concentrate dilutes between 3:1 and 10:1 with water depending on how durable you want it to be, boasting up to 6 months durability with the former dilution and as much as 6 weeks with the latter. We diluted the concentrate at the recommended 3:1 and set to work.
We sprayed a liberal amount on the first wheel, grabbed the pressure washer lance and blasted away the excess astounded to see the water literally bouncing off the surface in small perfect beads, like jewels shining in the mid noon sunshine.
On wheels 2, 3 and 4 we just misted the product on to the surface and wiped with a foam applicator before rinsing which reduced the amount of product needed to seal the wheels without wasting as much as we did on the first wheel.

Using what can only be explained as magic, Hydro2 sealed all 4 wheels in under 5 minutes! Not only does it seal the entire wheel all the way to the back of the barrel, it seals anything else it comes into contact with including; brake calipers, wheel nuts, and even the valves!

Price:
The product comes in a few types and sizes, firstly the concentrate comes in 100ml, 500ml and 1L size and CarPro also sell it ready to use (diluted 1:7) in 1L and 5L sizes as “Hydro LITE”
The 100ml concentrate we had on test seemed expensive at £12 but this made 400ml of ready to use wheel sealant, and we used 75ml to seal all 4 wheels which is just over £2 per application. With the full day to take off the wheels versus 5 minutes to use Hydro2 we think it’s a no brainer!
Buying in bigger quantities or diluting further will make this more cost effective.

Maintenance:
Another plus point here for Hydro2, it doesn’t require any fancy maintenance products, no special cleaners and no heavy acids are needed to clean the wheels. We simply maintained our wheels once a week with the Reset shampoo from CarPro.

Durability:
The part you’ve all been waiting for, the big question… does it really last?
As we write this, the test vehicle has covered 3,500 miles over 4 months and still beading water off and remain easy to clean on our weekly wash. We have no doubt this will last the 6 months claimed by the manufacturer. CarPro tell us the Hydro2 surface formed on our wheels is heat resistant to 200c which greatly reduces the amount of brake dust able to stick to the surface.

Conclusion:
The days of taking your wheels off every 3-6 months to seal them inside and out are a thing of the past, with Hydro2 being the perfect solution, saving both time and money!
Our experts tell us the only way we could improve the protection of our wheels is by coating with a semi-permanent ceramic quartz coating, such as DLUX which will give the same performance as Hydro2 but boasts a heat resistance of 800c and durability of up to 24 months from a single application.
